The 100 Black Men of America, Inc. is committed to the growth and development of America’s youth. Through gifts provided by corporate sponsors, the 100 Black Men of America, Inc. is able to provide scholarships to hundreds of deserving students on an equal opportunity basis regardless of race, sex, creed, or religious preference. Vocational Education Foundation - Red Lawson Scholarship: three $1,000 scholarships are given out to students who will complete a Career and Technical Education Program (CTE) and have a “B” or better in CTE courses. The scholarship is for college, community college, trade school, or other institute of higher learning. Applications are in the Career Center. The Prince William Education Association awards the Deloris C. Hampton Future Teacher Scholarships. Students can win $2,000 four-year scholarships dispersed in $500 increments over four years. Students must be a Prince William County Public School senior or graduate and be accepted to a teacher preparation program at an accredited college to be eligible. You must include your essay, high school transcript and two letters of recommendation (one must be from a teacher and the other from someone outside of school) with your application. The Prince William Education Association Member Dependent Scholarship is now active. Students must be a dependent of an active PWEA member and accepted to a two or four-year program at an accredited institution of higher learning. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Omicron Omega Chapter will award three $1,000 scholarships to deserving young women who complete an honors course of instruction and attend an accredited college or university in the fall. Two of these scholarships will be awarded to graduating seniors who attend historically black colleges or universities. Students must have at least a 3.5 gpa and a combined SAT score of 1000 or an ACT composite score of 22 or better. Students must submit an application, three references, official transcript, and essay. Applications are in the Career Center. The deadline is March 31, 2010.

The Arlington-Fairfax Chapter, Inc., of the Izaak Walton League of America will award a $12,000 scholarship (paid in equal installments over a four-year period) to a student who intends to continue his or her education in Environmental Sciences or a related field of study with an associate degree (2-year degree) or bachelor’s degree. The following criteria will be evaluated in determining the successful application: academic achievement, financial need, individual character, community achievements or activities, and ability to succeed  in college.  Applications are in the Career Center. Applications are now being accepted for the Virginia Sheriffs’ Institute Scholarship Program. These scholarships were established to provide students across the state of Virginia with financial assistance in their pursuit of an educational curriculum in the criminal justice field. This program is limited to students attending Virginia colleges and universities, majoring in the criminal justice field (those majoring in law or pursuing a career as a lawyer will not be considered a criminal justice major). AES Engineers is pleased to renew their scholarship offer for 2010. Their belief is that achieving a high grade point average should not be the only criteria for determining who deserves to be helped. They are offering a scholarship that will be awarded on the basis of character, as determined by evaluating the essays that are submitted. Scholarships are intended for future leaders across a wide spectrum of fields of study. This award is available to high school seniors and all students attending a post secondary educational facility. Students are not required to be taking Engineering courses to be eligible. The School of the Art Institute of Chicago awards merit scholarships in the amounts ranging from $2,000 to full tuition annually. Mid-Atlantic Christian University in North Carolina, a private, four-year university, will award a $8,000 Christian Character and Leadership Scholarship to one of our seniors who exhibits outstanding character and leadership. The scholarship will be allotted in increments of $1,000 each semester over a four-year period. Criteria for this scholarship includes: evidence of christian character, demonstrated leadership ability, and a minimum grade point average of 2.5. The Sentara Potomac Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship Program
The Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Capital One will award two $5,000 scholarships to two Latino seniors pursuing higher education. The Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Capital One have come together to fund this scholarship to reinforce the value of learning. These scholarships are intended for graduating Latino students who demonstrate leadership, community involvement, academic excellence, and extracurricular activities. Students must submit an application, essay of one and a half pages, and transcript. Applications are in the Career Center. The deadline is March 12, 2010.

This scholarship is for Juniors:

2010 TRIPLE-IMPACT COMPETITOR SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM is offering four $1,000 scholarships to juniors, two males and two females, whose ethical actions better themselves, their teammates and the game. Students must have a 2.5 or better GPA and demonstrate personal mastery, leadership, and honoring the game. Students must submit two letters of recommendation and up to three testimonials. The Kohl’s Kids Who Care® Scholarship Program recognizes and rewards young volunteers (ages 6-18) who help make their communities a better place to live.
Qualifications
·         The young volunteer’s actions must be described in detail and should document efforts that are above and beyond what is normally expected of a child his or her age.
·         Volunteer efforts should have made a positive impact on others and occurred in the last 12 months.
·         The activity cannot be performed solely to benefit a family member.
·         Winners are chosen based on the project, benefits and outcomes.
Winners / Awards
Nominees will be divided into two groups (ages 6–12 and 13–18). Awards will be given on three levels.
Store Winners More than 2,100 store winners will be awarded a $50 Kohl’s Gift Card.
Regional Winners More than 200 regional winners will be awarded $1,000 scholarships toward their post-secondary education.
National Winners Ten national winners will be awarded $9,000 scholarships for a total of $10,000 in scholarships, and Kohl’s will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on each winner’s behalf.

Nordstrom Scholarship Program for Juniors
Nordstrom is committed to celebrating our communities, and they think helping you achieve your dreams of a higher education is a great way to start. The Nordstrom Scholarship is about enabling you to achieve your educational goals. Annually, they award 40 scholarships of $10,000. These scholarships are paid out in equal installments of $2,500 over four years to the college of the student’s choice.

How to Qualify:
To be considered for a scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:
  • Be a high school junior
  • Have and maintain a cumulative unweighted GPA of at least 2.7 (on a 4.0 scale) throughout your high school career
  • Have participated in community/volunteer activities
  • Be planning to apply for financial assistance to attend college
  • Attend an accredited four-year college or university during all years for which the scholarship is awarded
  • Maintain a cumulative unweighted GPA of at least 2.7 (on a 4.0 scale) throughout your college career
  • Be eligible to attend a four-year college or university in the United States
  • Live and attend school in one of the participating geographic areas designated by Nordstrom
  • Not have a conviction for any crime

The VIP Women in Technology Scholarship (WITS) Program is sponsored by Visionary Integration Professionals, a global information technology and outsourcing firm. The WITS Program is made available annually to promising women across the nation.
Eligibility: To be eligible, a student must be enrolled at, or accepted into, either a two or four year college or university within the United States for the 2010 school year. These individuals must be planning a career in information technology or a related field.
Awards: The 2010 WITS program will give multiple scholarship awards that value up to $2,500 per recipient. Nine total awards were granted in 2009 for college or university study.
Evaluation Criteria: The scholarship is based on three important criteria, though other factors may be considered during evaluation. These factors include:
1. Academic Performance- Student must have earned a cumulative 3.0 grade point average (GPA)
2. Essay- The student’s thoughtful answer to an essay question
3. Level of participation in community service and/or extracurricular activities

The Granville P. Meade fund provides scholarship awards to worthy and needy Virginia high school seniors to attend one of Virginia’s public or private colleges or universities.  Since the recipients of the Granville P Meade Scholarship are based on both need and merit, applicants will need to demonstrate academic achievement, extracurricular activities, good character - as evidenced by letters of recommendation, and financial need.  In the past year, each scholarship was in the amount of $2,000 per year for four years, provided the student continues to meet the scholarship requirements.  Applications are in the Career Center.  Completed applications are due to Mr. Brent in the Main Office by March 9, 2010.

The Robert C. Byrd Scholarship Program is designed for seniors who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement.  It is a program that promotes student excellence and achievement and recognizes exceptionally able students who show promise of continued excellence.  Prince William County Schools will nominate 5 students from across the county who meet the criteria. Scholarships are in the amount of $1,500. Applications are in the Career Center and are due back to Mrs. Bryant by March 15, 2010.

The Friends of the Prince William Senior Center at Woodbridge,  Inc.,  is sponsoring an Essay Scholarship for graduating seniors entitled “Positive Aging:  A Senior Adult Who Has Influenced My Life”.  Applicant must be accepted by an accredited four-year college/university, community college or technical school.  Students must be enrolled in English, Journalism, or Family Life Education classes to apply. The National Society of Black Engineers – Alumni Extension, Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area Chapter (NSBE-AEDC) Scholarship Award was established as a means of recognizing and rewarding students who have demonstrated academic excellence as well as outstanding service within their communities. This is a merit-based scholarship awarded to African-American students planning to pursue degrees in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. $1,000 scholarship awards will be presented to students who NSBE-AEDC feels will demonstrate the greatest promise as future African-American technical professionals. Two Educational Foundation, Inc. scholarships will be awarded on behalf of the Virginia Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society to give financial support to students majoring in or showing a strong desire to major in a course curriculum related to natural resource conservation and/or environmental studies. Scholarships are in the amount of $1,000. One will be awarded annually on behalf of the VASWCD and one will be awarded annually on behalf of the VASWCD Auxiliary to an eligible individual nominated by Virginia’s SWCDs. Students must rank in the top 20% of the graduating class or have at least a 3.0 gpa. Sentara Potomac Hospital (formerly Potomac Hospital) will award scholarships to students who plan to earn a bachelor’s degree in healthcare, a health-related field or nursing. Scholarships for healthcare and a health-related field will be in the amount of $1,000 with $500 for each of three additional school years of continued enrollment. The nursing scholarship will be in the amount of $1,000 with $1,000 for each of three additional years of continued enrollment. Students must submit an application (available in the Career Center), letters of recommendation, transcript and SAT scores. The deadline is March 15, 2010.

The Naval Officers’ Spouses’ Club of Washington, D.C. will award several scholarships to seniors.  The scholarships are 100% merit based and must be applied only to tuition. The NOSC scholarships are awarded for one year and are not renewable. The applicant must be a dependent child of an active duty, retired, or deceased U.S. Navy service member who:
  • resides and serves in a command within the boundaries of Naval District Washington or had served in a command in Naval District Washington, or  
  • served in a command in Naval District Washington and is deceased.
Students must apply and attend as a full-time student for the 2010-2011 academic year in an accredited institution, such as a two or four year undergraduate college, a visual or performing arts school, or a vocational/technical school.  The applicant must be a U.S. citizen and possess a valid military dependent identification card. A recipient receiving an appointment to a U.S. Service Academy or a full tuition scholarship will forfeit this scholarship.  Applications are in the Career Center. For over 40 years, the Washington Metropolitan Area Chapters of the Order of AHEPA and the Daughters
of Penelope have honored high school seniors affiliated with the AHEPA family or the Greek Orthodox Church who have achieved excellence in academic; athletics, civic, and cultural endeavors. In order to be considered for an award, you must: (l) be affiliated with either the AHEPA family or the Greek Orthodox Church within the jurisdiction of the Greater Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area; (2) be a graduating high school senior; (3) have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better; and (4) have participated in extracurricular activities and/or lettered or received awards in varsity sports. Agnew Scholarship is awarded to a senior pursuing a nursing career OR a field related to the medical profession. Students must be a U.S. citizen, resident of Virginia, plan to attend a Virginia school offering an accredited course in nursing or related field, and be in need of financial assistance. The Florida A&M University (FAMU) Computer Information Sciences (CIS) Program, housed in the College of Arts and Sciences, is the recipient of a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant valued at $552,000 dedicated to recruiting minority women to computer science and information technology disciplines. The program, entitled African-American Women in Computer Science (AAWCS), is a four-year program that provides scholarships and other assistance to women who express a financial need and an interest in computer science or information technology.

The Coast Guard’s Chapter of Blacks In Government Scholarship Program is accepting applications. A complete application package must be submitted to the scholarship committee no later than March 31, 2010. The package consists of a completed scholarship application form, a written essay, an official high school transcript, a completed certification of academic standing form, and personal recommendations.
·         Applicant must be graduating from an accredited secondary educational institution.
·         Applicant must have applied for admission into at least one accredited institution of higher learning for the Fall 2010 school term.
·         Applicant must have at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA.
·         Applicant must provide two recommendations. Recommendations can be from the following: Official of current school, community organization, or church; or an employer.

No. Virginia Electric Cooperative. Two $1,500 scholarships will be awarded to students whose homes are served by Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative. Students must have a 3.5 grade point average and have leadership abilities in community service, extracurricular activities, and or work experience. The Washington Chapter of the American Society of Military Comptrollers (ASMC) awards several $1,000 gifts to seniors. The top three award winners will also receive an additional $1,000 per year for up to an additional three years. One award recipient will also be recommended for consideration for an additional $2,000 scholarship. Students must be entering a field of study related to financial operations (business administration, economics, public administration, operations research, accounting, finance or other related field). The Prince William County-Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce will award twelve $1,000 scholarships to seniors in the following categories:

  • Leadership Scholarship – Students must have at least a 2.5 GPA and demonstrate leadership characteristics and qualities

  • Science and Technology Scholarship – Students must have at least a 3.5 GPA

The Armed Forces Communications Electronics Association of Northern Virginia (AFCEA NOVA)
annually awards a significant number of merit-based scholarship grants to qualified students who are pursuing degrees or advanced training in various technical fields such as:
  • Information Technology / Computer Science / Systems
  • Engineering
  • Mathematics
  • Pure Natural/Physical sciences
  • And other technology-related fields supportive of our National Security.
 
All students who are permanent residents of the Greater Washington area are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Through this program, AFCEA NOVA encourages bright, motivated students to apply their skills and knowledge to the challenges that America will face in the future. Scholarship recipients are encouraged to explore careers in government or military service, and/or to consider employment in one of the private companies working alongside the military/governmental agencies to protect our nation’s freedom. To that end, applicants stay engaged with AFCEA throughout their educational career, and other opportunities for learning and mentoring are offered to scholarship recipients. As an example, AFCEA NOVA is in the early stages of planning an internship program to further augment the experience of our winners.
 
The scholarship awards may be used at any accredited college or university within the United States. Membership in AFCEA is not necessary to be considered for a scholarship, however, while the scholarship is largely a merit-based award, financial need and past/current military/government service may be factors considered in the final decisions. Recommendations and transcripts are required.
 
AFCEA NOVA Scholars receive a one-time $4,000 scholarship award if they are full-time students; a $2,000 scholarship if they are part-time students. The application process opened on November 15, 2009, and applications must be complete by February 15, 2010. The application is an online application, with additional information (transcripts and letters of recommendation) to be sent in by fax or mail. For details and to view/begin the application, visit http://www.afceanova.org/education/scholarships.

DECA OFFERS SCHOLARSHIPS FOR MILITARY CHILDREN

2010 Scholarships for Military Children opened on November  3, 2009. Scholarship applications are now available in commissaries worldwide and online through a link at http://www.commissaries.com and directly at http://www.militaryscholar.org.   Only dependent, unmarried children, younger than age 21 (age 23 if enrolled as a full- time student at a college or university) of active duty personnel, reserve, Guard and retired military members, survivors of service members who died while on active duty, or survivors of individuals who died while receiving retired pay from the military may apply for a scholarship. Eligibility is determined using DEERS, the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System database. Applicants should ensure that they, as well as their sponsor, are enrolled in the DEERS database and have a current ID card. The applicant must be planning to attend, or already be attending, an accredited college or university full time in the fall of 2010, or be enrolled in a program of studies designed to transfer directly into a four-year program.     Applicants should prepare to submit an essay on the topic "You can travel back in time; however, you cannot change events. What point in history would you visit and why?" At least one scholarship will be awarded at every store location with qualified applicants. Applications must be turned in to a commissary by close of business February 17, 2010.

The Quantico Officers’ Spouses’ Organization will offer merit scholarships to seniors. Students must currently live on Marine Corps Base Quantico or be the dependent child of any active duty or retired sponsor who currently works at Marine Corps Base Quantico, or the dependent of a retired sponsor from Marine Corps Base Quantico, regardless of rank or branch of service. Recipients receive $16,000 annually for four years, must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and enroll in at least 12 credit hours a semester. The National Commission for Cooperative Education sponsors its 8th Annual National Co-op Scholarship Program. They will award 170 merit co-op scholarships of $6,000 each for a total renewable value of $4,200,000. These scholarships will be awarded to seniors and transfer students who plan to participate in college cooperative education at one of their partner colleges and universities (Drexel Univ., Johnson & Wales, Kettering, Pace, Rochester Institute of Technology, Univ. of Cincinnati, Univ. of Toledo, or Wentworth Institute of Tech.).
