The Quantico Officers’ Spouses’ Organization will offer merit scholarships to seniors. Students must currently live on Marine Corps Base Quantico or be the dependent child of any active duty or retired sponsor who currently works at Marine Corps Base Quantico, or the dependent of a retired sponsor from Marine Corps Base Quantico, regardless of rank or branch of service. The Washington Crossing Foundation is pleased to announce the 41st Annual National Foundation Scholarship Awards for seniors that are planning careers in government service. Scholarships range from $500 to $5,000 for students planning careers in government service for study at the college of the recipient's choice. (Other awards in amounts as the judges may determine.) Students must write a one-page essay stating why he or she plans a career in government service including any inspiration to be derived from the leadership of George Washington in his famous crossing of the Delaware.
 
ELIGIBILITY
Competition open to all high school seniors who are U. S. citizens and are planning careers of service to the United States in local, state, or federal government. Entrants receiving full four-year scholarships shall be eligible only for one-year special awards. Awards for those entering Armed Forces Colleges are eligible for one-year special awards.

Fleet Reserve Association Scholarships. The FRA National Committee on Americanism-Patriotism sponsors an annual Americanism Essay Contest, based on a theme announced each spring. The contest includes a Grand National Prize of a $10,000 U.S. Savings Bond, with $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000 Savings Bonds awarded to the first, second and third place winners in each grade category. All regional winners are judged at the national level and receive a certificate of recognition. Other prizes are awarded at the branch and regional levels. FRA's Essay Contest is open to all students in grades 7 through 12. Stop by the Career Center for an application. NFIB Young Entrepreneur Award program. Are you a budding entrepreneur or have dreams of starting your own business? Then enter the NFIB competition. There are a minimum of 150 scholarships including non-renewable and renewable awards (nationwide) ranging in value of $1,000-$10,000. The purpose of the program is to recognize the entrepreneurial spirit of graduating high school seniors planning to enroll at an accredited two-or four-year university, college, or vocational institute in the fall of 2010. Students should demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit and initiative through examples such as: starting his/her own business; participating in organizations such as DECA, Junior Achievement, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Future Farmers of America (FFA), National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), among others; or through other initiatives. We encourage students to mention any endeavors or work experiences offered as community service. An officially established business is not a requirement. Lee-Jackson Scholarship Program is open to juniors and seniors.  Students must plan to attend a four-year accredited U.S. college. Financial need is not a consideration, but students must not have won a Lee-Jackson scholarship before.The objective of this scholarship program is to acquaint young people with the historical legacy of two of Virginia’s most outstanding military figures, General Robert E. Lee and General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. Three $1,000 scholarships will be awarded in each of Virginia’s eight Superintendents’ Regional Study to students submitting the best essays on the career, character, or some other aspect of the life of either General Lee or General Jackson, or both. Forest Park High School Crystal Carneiro Scholarships. Crystal was a student at Forest Park High School the first year the school opened. She was killed in a tragic car accident during that school year. In her memory, two $500 scholarships were established to assist seniors with a college education. Eligibility Requirements:
  • Student must be a senior planning to enroll in a 2 or 4-year college/university or
      vocational/trade school
  • Student must attend Forest Park High School
  • Student must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 and submit a transcript
  • Student must submit one recommendation letter from a teacher/counselor/administrator
  • Student must submit a 250-300 word essay on the topic “Why Attending College is Important to Me and How I Will Use My Degree to Help Others”
Winners will be notified by March 1, 2010. Scholarships will be forwarded to the colleges NLT August 15, 2010. Applications are in the Career Center. Minimum qualifications considered for admission to the program include at least a 29 ACT composite score or SAT score of 1280 (critical reading and math only), at least a 3.5 gpa, evidence of community and leadership activities and commitment to pursue a 4-year degree. The Ron Brown Scholar Program seeks to identify African-American high school seniors who will make significant contributions to society. Applicants must excel academically, exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need. The applicant must be a US citizen or hold a permanent resident visa card. Current college students are not eligible to apply.
Each year, a minimum of ten students will be designated Ron Brown Scholars and will receive $10,000 annually for four years, for a total of $40,000. The recipients may use the renewable scholarships to attend an accredited four-year college or university of their choice within the United States. Ron Brown Scholarships are not limited to any specific field or career objective and may be used to pursue any academic discipline. More than 250 students have been designated as Ron Brown Scholars since the inception of the Program.
Ron Brown Scholars are selected in the spring prior to entering college. Applications are screened during the month of February by Ron Brown Scholar Program staff. In March, finalists are invited to participate in a weekend selection process in Washington, D.C. at the expense of the CAP Charitable Foundation. Finalists are interviewed by members of the Ron Brown Selection Committee and are expected to participate in several Selection Weekend activities. Scholarship winners are selected on the basis of their applications, interviews and participation in Selection Weekend activities. Notification follows immediately.
Application Deadline
The Ron Brown Scholar Program currently has two deadlines for applications (students must be current high school seniors at the time of their application):
November 1st - application will be considered for the Ron Brown Scholar Program AND forwarded to a select and limited number of additional scholarship providers.
January 9th - final postmarked deadline in order to be considered for only the Ron Brown Scholar Program ONLY.
Application materials must be mailed in one packet. Transcripts and letters of recommendation should not be sent under separate cover. Incomplete, e-mailed or faxed applications will not be considered.
Due to the volume of applications received, the Ron Brown Scholar Program can only notify semi-finalists and finalists of their status in the competition. This notification will be made in February and March. Winners of the scholarship will be notified by April 1st and names will be posted on the Ron Brown Scholar Program web site in late April/early May.
Scholarship Conditions
Ron Brown Scholarships may be used to supplement benefits from the college or university a student plans to attend and from other foundations or organizations.
Scholars may use the scholarship to cover the costs of tuition, fees, books, room and board, computers, health insurance, and other college-related expenses.

FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES 9-12:

The First Freedom Center announces the 17th Annual First Freedom Student Competition. This national essay contest offers 9th-12th grade students an opportunity to compete for a $3,000 $1,500, and $750 award as they examine the history and implementation of religious freedom – the freedom of conscience – in American democracy and the world today. The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) 
Funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was established in 1999 to provide outstanding African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in all discipline areas and a graduate education for those students pursuing studies in mathematics, science, engineering, education, public health or library science. The goal of GMS is to promote academic excellence and to provide an opportunity for thousands of outstanding students with significant financial need to reach their fullest potential.
The Gates Millennium Scholars program is available to graduating high school seniors. It provides substantial scholarship awards to exceptional high school seniors for study at the college of their choice. Eligible applicants must have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale, demonstrated leadership skills, and significant financial need.

The National Commission for Cooperative Education sponsors its 8th Annual National Co-op Scholarship Program. They will award 170 merit co-op scholarships of $6,000 each for a total renewable value of $4,200,000. These scholarships will be awarded to seniors and transfer students who plan to participate in college cooperative education at one of their partner colleges and universities (Drexel Univ., Johnson & Wales, Kettering, Pace, Rochester Institute of Technology, Univ. of Cincinnati, Univ. of Toledo, or Wentworth Institute of Tech.). To qualify, students must have at least a 3.5 grade point average, complete the required admissions application materials, and be accepted to one of the partner schools .The National Commission encourages minority and female students as well as students interested in science, math, engineering and technology to apply for this merit co-op scholarship. The Hispanic Scholarship Fund provides scholarship opportunities to seniors who plan to enroll in college, community college students who plan to transfer to a 4-year college or university, currently enrolled college students, and graduate and professional students. The Manassas Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy annually awards the Effie Lee Nelson Speiden Scholarship to a local female. To be eligible for the $1,500 scholarship, students must be:
·         Eligible for membership in the UDC (for scholarship eligibility, young women must be a direct descendant of a Confederate soldier or of a person who provided tangible aid to the Confederacy);
·         A resident of Manassas, Manassas Park, or Prince William County
·         Have a grade point average of 3.0 or better
·         Accepted by an accredited Virginia college/university for full time attendance next fall
